I feel sorry for the people but they have done it to themselves, if you are stupid enough to give one man every power he needs to be a dictator you deserve all that is coming to you.
Erdogan was pretty good for about 5 years I actually liked him, but he soon began to become islamic in almost all his rhetoric and has turned into one of the most miserable nasty people ever to walk the earth, he has no qualms about calling over 50% who may vote against him Traitors and seems to get a weird kick from turning people against one another (Sadly many Turks stupidly oblige) .
He has gone from a strong confident leader to a weak thoughtless paranoid coward who uses Islam and populism to win the day, simply because he has nothing else left.

Erdogan is a very good orator he is no Trump, he knows what he is doing and he has a decent hold of the Turkish language, he is a preacher more than a politician and that is his downfall.
He and his party have purposely destroyed Education and are killing modernization too, all the brains have fucked off and the rest want to leave too, no money left either he has spunked and stolen all of it spending it on rebuilding Turkey but has spent fuck all on education and creating jobs making factories etc.
So Turkey looks newer and shinier but the people cannot eat new Motorways and bridges, although they are very impressed with it, Turkey has many mega building projects of which Erdogan will undoubtedly get much cream from.
Put it this way Turkey is fucked as no one trusts Erdogan or his Mafia like running of his country and Erdogan cannot trust anyone either he is paranoid about both America and Russia and Europe too, as for his neighbouring Arab states he knows they would sooner stab him than assist him, yep Turkey is fucked.

It's possible that Turkey is aligning itself with the GCC nations as it may view that as a faster growing market and, amongst them, it would be as Germany is to the EU and could dominate the whole region on an industrial & technological front.
Very few GCC nations have diversified any significant distance from oil & gas production (and for those that have, tourism is their alternative industry of choice), but the local demand for manufactured goods continues to grow. They also lack the basic resources required to set up self-supporting manufacturing bases, so these goods will have to be imported for the foreseeable future.
Turkey has a semi-westernised workforce and could probably entice many of it's citizens currently working in the west back, bringing with them western commercial & business practices.
With the world's major oil producing nations as his new "best mates", Erdogan probably feels he has the strength to tell America (and possibly the EU) to go fuck itself and not worry about the fall-out.

But I doubt you will encounter too many happy Turks as their money can now be substituted with pebbles and small stones.
Trump is squeezing the life out of the Turkish Lira Erdogan thinks he is mr big bollocks well good luck fighting with a bigger loon than himself, Trump just put big tariffs on Turkish steel and that did it.
Trump is fucking with Europe he does not care, Erdogan is screwed and Turkey is screwed because they have a leader who has a country that is heavily tied to America all done by himself and his Islamic party he is trying to move away from America but America is having none of it.
Turkey is getting fucked by both America and Europe they are buying in almost everything and selling out almost nothing now this works for a few years as deals are done but when a country starts to tank it becomes a suicidal thing.
Turkey was one of a very few countries that could sustain itself Erdogan stopped all that for power influence and greed he gave the west what it wanted he banned people from farming and turkey now needs the west to eat, so if a civil war kicks off the Turkish people are fucked.

As it happens, both I and my wife did get salmonella infections from a meal at an Istanbul restaurant on that trip, and we spent 24 hours in hospital with re-hydration drips and lots of liquid shit.
I wont be returning to Turkey in a hurry.
